Former U.S. Women's National Team captain Alex Morgan announced her retirement, revealing she's pregnant with her second child, in a video shared on her social media accounts Thursday (September 5).
Morgan, 35, a captain for San Diego Wave FC, said she will play her final NWSL game when the team hosts the North Carolina Courage on Sunday (September 8).
"I'm going to get to the point quickly, I'm retiring," Morgan said. "I have so much clarity about this decision, and I am so happy to be able to finally tell you," Morgan said in the video. "It has been a long time coming, and this decision wasn't easy, but at the beginning of 2024 I felt in my heart and soul that this was the last season that I would play soccer."
Morgan, who co-captained the USWNT team from 2018 to 2020, is a two-time World Cup champion and 2012 London Olympics Gold medalist, ranking fifth all-time among then American women with 123 goals scored in 224 caps.
Morgan was, however, left off the USWNT roster ahead of the team's eventual gold medal run at the 2024 Paris Olympics amid an ankle injury early in the NWSL season.
"Today, I’m disappointed about not having the opportunity to represent our country on the Olympic stage. This will always be a tournament that is close to my heart and I take immense pride any time I put on the crest. In less than a month, I look forward to supporting this team and cheering them on alongside the rest of our country. LFG," Morgan wrote on her social media accounts at the time.
